A furnace for burning wood, paper, etc., employs a secondary ignition system for the combustion gases to ensure that all combustible particles in the smoke are burned, using a casing through which the gases pass, with a set of baffles around which they travel in a zig-zag or meander path, with holes through the sides of the casing, for entry of combustion air. The system includes baffles in the form of screens which may be of metal mesh or porous material, and also pressure dividers across the gas flow, below the baffles. If necessary, a supply of further combustion gas may be introduced at the bottom.
