A plastic capsule is made from two half shells hinged at one end, and fitted with a securing catch at the other. The capsule contains a light walled, folded inflatable life raft and a bottle of compressed gas. The capsule is pulled open using special outside grips. An arm moulded to the hinge of one half shell presses a plunger into the end of the gas bottle to release the gas. The arm is fitted with a roller to prevent damage to the thin life raft, as the gas bottle is inside the raft. As the raft is inflated it pushes itself out of the capsule, to which it is attached by a short line.
