When a liquid on rising or falling passes a predetermined level a reed relay is opened or closed for suitable signals to be given. A float (3) travelling between fixed limits, set by a peg (16) in a slot (15) carries beneath it a tubular extension (8) with a cylindrical magnet (4) inside, having its south pole at the bottom. The float extension moves in a closed tube (12) that passes through the bottom of the tank. A reed relay is placed outside the tank in a holder that can be positioned along the tube at a desired height. The relay is biased on (or off) by a second magnet (5) whose north pole is adjacent to the relay and on the side away from the tube. When the magnet on the float is level with the second magnet the reed relay changes state.
