The printing pastes have a pH of 4.5 - 7.5 and contain thickeners with no reactive H to react with the aminoplast resins present. Suitable thickeners are synthetic polymers, esp. copolymers from maleic anhydride and vinyl isobutyl ether, lightly cross-linked with hexamethylene diamine, or alkali salts of polyacrylic acid opt. lightly cross-linked e.g. with divinyl dioxane. Stability of the printing pastes is substantially higher than strongly alkaline pastes, dye yields and brilliance are improved, and with light and medium shades, post-washing to remove unfixed dye can be eliminated. Uncontrolled variations in shade when using alkali-sensitives dyes are prevented.
