Machine wire leaving the rolling mills is rapidly water and/or air quenched to 550-700 degrees C. The wire is arranged in loose coils on a conveyor and cooled in still air at 0-25 degrees C/sec., to the phase transformation point, then passed directly into a tank contng an aq. bath at a temp. near, pref. equal to, the b.pt. and the dwell time in the bath and the immersion conditions are controlled to ensure the allotropic transformation (from austenite to ferrite plus perlite) in complete absence of recalescence. Salts or surfactant compsns. are pref. suspended and/or dissolved in the aq. bath. The conveyor pref. travels in thermally-insulated chamber. Process avoids martensite or bainite formation.
