The system is for testing an underwater high pressure gas pipeline and for checking of and location of leaks, uses an ultrasonic source and detector separated by some 1500 metres (horizontally) from the pipeline and moved along parallel to the pipeline. It has an impulse oscillation frequency of 20-50kHz at 0.1-10 impulses/sec in a planar front of 1/2-10 deg., spread at an angle of 2-45 deg. to the horizontal. The gas pipeline pressure is some 3.5-210 atmospheres and the disturbances resultant in the impulses received by the detector when they impinge upon gas bubbles escaping from the pipeline are recorded and evaluated to allow exact location of the leak.
