The selective protection system, for power supply networks, has anumber of circuit breakers distributed along the network's transmission lines dividing it into sections. Any circuit breaker's (2) response time in the case of a short circuit depends upon the distance of that breaker from the place where the short circuit occurred. The farther a breaker is away from the short, the longer it takes to open, i.e. a breaker only opens if it detects the flow of a short circuit current and not otherwise. The result of this sequence of operations is that only the circuit breaker adjacent to the short circuit remains open.
