The silencer assembly (2, 3, 4, 5, 6) has a cooling air tube (7) running axially through it, the whole being arranged so that the tube intake (12) faces upwind when the machine is moving forward. When it is not moving,flow is created by an injector (8) projecting from the downstream end of the silencer into the air tube. There is also a connection (9) with a cooling air sleeve (10, 11) around the initial length of exhaust pipe (1)run of this sleeve is such as to produce its own airflow, that will supplement the effect of the injector (8), alternatively the injector will serve both cooling paths (7, 9). A back-up blower may be fitted.
