The cpd. m-trifluoromethyltetrabromophenol (I) is new. It is prepd. by reacting m-trifluoromethylphenol with excess Br2 in presence of Fe (halides) at 0-200 degrees C. (I) is useful as a pesticide. It has good thermal stability, decomposing only at =250 degrees c, is soluble in many solvents esp. aromatic hydrocarbons, and can be prepared in a highly pure state with yields of 80-90%.
