In a process for the prodn. of KxH3-xPO4 (where 1 X =3) from KH2PO4, NH3 is conducted into an aq. suspension of KH2PO4 with stirring and cooling until the pH is 8, then gaseous NH3 and CO2 are introduced at 50 degrees C and pH 9-11.5 until the CO2 concn. is not 50 g/l; the resulting product soln. of KxH3-xPO4, which can also contain dissolved KHCO3 and/or K2CO3, is sepd. from ppted. (NH4)3PO4.yH2O, then NH3 and (NH4)2CO3 are driven off and the soln. is opt. evaporated; and the (NH4)3PO4.hH2O separated off is treated with NaCl soln. or suspension to give poorly soluble Na-NH4 phosphate and an NH4Cl soln. contg. NH3 and NaCl. The potassium phosphate product is useful for fertilizer prodn. The Na-NH4 phosphate also produced can be reacted with KCl and phosphoric acid to give crude KH2PO4.
