The current supply operates from alternating mains via a rectifier, with the battery used for emergency supply during mains failure. When the mains supply is intact, the battery is connected for charge maintenance, and a compensation device supplies an adjustable booster voltage during battery discharge. The compensation device (A) supplies during mains operation a booster voltage for battery (B) charging or charge maintenance, and if mains fail it provides voltage of opposite polarity for the load (V) supply. Preferably the input circuit of the compensation device contains contacts (51, 52) of two switching contractors, for alternating power supply recording to operating mode.
