Existing ship canals are rapidly and economically extended by dry excavation. These canals may have to be widened and deepened to accommodate ships of greater capacities. A ship canal section is dammed and water is pumped out and extension work is carried out in dry canal sections by conventional machines economically. Additional effort due to damming and pumping during extension work forms an insignificant fraction of extension costs in comparison with wet methods or excavation in which special machines of high power have to be used to lift also large quantities of water which is drained back into the canal.
