The recovery of pure H2 from crude H2, which after removal of higher boiling accompanying impurities contains only CO, N2, A and CH4, is effected by a two-stage washing process, (1) using liq. CH4 and (2) using a mixt. of CH4 and one or more 3C hydrocarbons, is which mixt. is regenerated and recycled to the process. The H2 obtd. is of hydrogenation purity. The need of a rectifier to work up the washing agent of the second stage is obviated.
