A resonant radiation source is used to produce the resonant wavelengths of the element to be detected. There are means for alternate operation of the h.f. field and the resonance radiator, with a spectroscopic device for the element wavelength separation, and a detector for radiation absorbed or emitted by the atoms of the vapour. The elements are atomised and excited in a dielectric cell in a low pressure noble gas h.f. plasma, whose frequency is shifted in phase by 90 deg. with respect to that of the resonance radiation source; the cell is connected through a valve to the noble gas reservoir for maintaining constant the noble gas partial pressure; an electric switching and evaluating device generates output signals derived from the four measurement conditions resulting from pulsed operation of the h.f. field and the radiation source.
