The equipment registers blood pressure by stopping two manometer needles in turn. Systolic pressure (at the appearance of sound in the microphone) is registered satisfactorily, but the original equipment has proved to be sometimes indecisive and sometimes premature in detecting diastole (when the sound disappears) and to register diastolic pressure wrongly in consequence. The modification now made consists in providing an additional amplifier (9) and coupling it to the original circuit by shining a light bulb (7) on a photo diode (10). The modified equipment is more sensitive and so more reliably detects the last of the sequence of sounds. The light bulb (7) is exposed to view on the meter, so as to give visual indication of any irregularity in the patient's pulse.
