The warhead of a ballistic rocket used for underwater application has an explosive charge which is initiated at a predetermined immersion depth after the projectile has entered the water with the nose first from the air. The enveloped explosive charge is exploded so that the gas bubble formed is initially directed downwards to increase shock effect on nearby submarines or surface ships. The sheathed, enclosed explosive charge (5) is an explosive producing a high volume of gases. For this purpose the explosive may be mixed with aluminium powder. The initiation point (8) at the projectile tail (4) ensures that the explosive pulse is directed downwards, away from the water surface.
