Log sawn from tree trunks may be tapered or curved in plan and they must be stacked, particularly on railway wagons, side by side in several layers in a regular substantially parallel pile. A log is delivered on a roller conveyor and is immediately raised on lifting beams. The hanging arms have projecting lugs at their lower ends and both are rotated inwards so that by operation of power cylinder the log may be clamped and supported. All the mechanism is duplicated at the other end of the log. By operation of the electric motor the chain drives the main trolley rightwards to the stacking position. Under the influence of the various limit switches the main trolley and the subsidiary trolley are able to place each log automatically in an appropriate position.
