A frame retains a batch of bottles during handling. Cartons are stacked on a pallet. A hollow frame and knife are suspended from a runner on a beam. The beam moves vertically. The frame descends, enveloping the bottles. The knife opens the end of the carton. The frame enters a trough horizontally, carrying the bottles aside. The trough with bottles descends to the level of the exit conveyor. Further sideways frame travel, out of the trough, slides the bottles on to the exit conveyor. The cut carton left on the stack is pushed on to another conveyor by the returning frame, which then descends, enveloping the next exposed carton.
