The object is to reduce the current flow through the switching contacts in order to make the output voltage much less dependant on contact resistance variations. This is achieved by connecting an auxiliary resitor in series with the element of the first decade, whose value lies between 1.2 and 2.5 times the element value. The auxiliary resistor is permanently in parallel with the second decade whose resistance, including subsequent stages, is 9 times the value of the auxiliary resistor. The second decade also has an additional series resistor. Subsequent stages have a resistance of 18 times the element value. A double contact switch connects the decades after the first.
