The detector comprises a laser generator (2) emitting a first red light beam, and an afocal optical system (6, 8) which receives the laser beam and creates a second beam of increased intensity. A light detector (10) receives the second beam and detects interruption of the beam if an obstacle is between the afocal system (6, 8) and the light detector (10). To relatively increase the divergence of the second beam in the vertical direction there is a cylindrical lens (4) situated between the laser generator (2) and the afocal system (6, 8). The system is used for a railway tunnel and the beam at the start of the tunnel is about 10cm above the ground with a diameter of 1.3mm. At the tunnel end the beam is 5cm wide and 50cm high.
