The vertical and directional reference instrument has a vertical gyroscope (4) and a directional gyroscope (9). It also has a horizon indicating cylinder (1) which rotates about an axis (2) which itself rotates in a gimbal (3). The axis (2) of the horizon cylinder is kept horizontal by the vertical gyroscope (4). The drive to the horizon cylinder (1) is by gear wheels (5, 6, 7, 8) from the pitching motion of the vertical gyroscope (4). The directional gyroscope (9) has its two gimbals (10) inside the horizon cylinder (1) and its external axis (12) is kept parallel to the spin axis (15) of the vertical gyroscope (4) by an auxiliary gear (14) which engages the gear system of the vertical gyroscope so as to turn in the same sense and by the same amount as the gear (5).
