In an electrochemical process for the purificn. of an ionising liq. by elimination of fluoride ions capable of forming an insol. aluminium cpd. an electric current is passed between the anode which has an area of its immersed surface made of aluminium, aluminium alloy or an insol. aluminium cpd. and a cathode via an electrolyte formed from a supply of the ionising liq. so as to produce an insol. cpd. of aluminium with fluoride ions, the insol. prod. then being eliminated while the purified liq. is collected separately. Used for purificn. of industrial, liq. effluents such as rinse water from electroplating processes, drainage from cooling towers and gas scrubbers. This is an uncomplicated continuous process which is readily adapted to automatic control. The electrochemical action completes the purificn. process without chemical additives or further pH adjustment. No diaphragm is required between cathode and anode.
