A low cost reference input unit for closed loop position controllers utilises a medium accuracy potentiometer. The output of a multi-turn analogue potentiometer is fed to a programming unit and to a selector/display unit. The selector/display unit has a digital voltmeter to provide accurate display of the potentiometer setting. The reference signal is transmitted to a comparator that receives as the other input, the feedback signal from a position transducer. A control block provides outputs for the power drive dependent upon the comparator output and relating to direction of motion and the null position. It is claimed that a low accuracy potentiometer coupled to a single digital voltmeter provides a low cost means of providing reference input.
