Alumina for catalytic applications is prod. by hydrolysis of an aluminium alkoxide, sepn. of the aq. phase contg. aluminium oxide component from the org. phase, and isolation and drying of the resulting alumina is improved by adjusting the pH of the sepd. aq. phase to 10.0-11.0 (pref. 10.5-11.0) whereby the catalytic activity of the subsequently sepd. and dried alumina is increased. Alumina so produced is suitable for use as a catalyst or a catalyst-carrier; it has high porosity (pore vol. is 1.0-2.75 cm3/g), large specific surface area (260-400 m2/g) and low heaping wt. (0.12-0.40 g/cm3).
