Solid binder for alumina-contg. refractory materials consists of AlPO4 and H3PO4 and/or a mixt. of (NH4)H2PO4 and a solid, inorganic or organic acid. Comminuted mullite or chamotte is mixed with the above binder and water and heated at a temp. above 150 degrees C. The binder has good storage stability and become workable upon addition of water. The aluminium phosphate may contain up to 35 wt. % (pref. 12-28 wt.%) of matter removable by calcination. H3PO4 can be replaced, wholly or partly), by its urea salt. The molar ratio Al2O3:P2O5 is 1:1.5N (pref. 1:3). The pref. acids are amidosulphonic, citric and oxalic acids.
