Nitrogen-contg. fibres on a woven jute fabric base are treated in an acid to weakly alkaline aq. bath contg. 0.05-3 wt. % based on total wt. of fibres and backing, of high mol. polyethylene imine and/or alkoxylated derivs. The process is used in treatment of carpets before or during dyeing. Staining of the fibres by materials, e.g. lignin, extracted from the jute is thus prevented and alkaline dyeing conditions which severely limit the range of dyes available, are unnecessary.
