A process working under the supervision of a large number of feed back control loops is brought to a rough optimum by this method. The values of a number of selected variables are measured. The difference between the actual value and a present limiting value is determined for each variable. One controlled variable is to be adjusted to move the process in the direction of optimum working and its adjustment will affect each of the variables just measured. The largest allowable adjustment will bring one of the measured variables to its limit (e.g. a valve may become fully open or closed). The variable which will reach its limit with the smallest adjustment of the controlled variable is identified and the adjustment is made to bring this variable to its limit. Used with any process having many control loops. The process reaches a rough optimum and if desired the operator can reset the limit on the limiting variable so that further optimisation can take place.
