1481976 Stabilizing phosphoric acid FERTILIZANTES FOSFATADOS MEXICANOS SA 8 Aug 1974 [13 Dec 1973] 34993/74 Heading C1A Impure wet-process phosphoric acid containing 28 to 32 wt. per cent of P 2 O 5 and, as impurities, compounds of Fe, Al, Si, F, Na and K is stabilized against sludge formation by: (i) adding to the acid 0-1 to 1 wt. per cent of an inorganic oxidizing agent and 0À1 to 1 wt. per cent of reactive silica; (ii) concentrating the acid to a P 2 O 5 content of 35 to 42 wt. per cent, steps (i) and (ii) being carried out in either order; (iii) ageing the concentrated solution for a time sufficient for the formation of a solid phase and a relatively stable liquid phase of phosphoric acid; (iv) separating the liquid and solid phases; (v) further concentrating the liquid phase to a P 2 O 5 content of at least 50 wt. per cent, and then subjecting the acid to a further separation from precipitated solids to provide a clarified acid having less than 1 wt. per cent solids immediately after clarification. The oxidizing agent is preferably nitric acid, but may be sodium chromate, potassium dichromate or potassium permanganate. "Reactive silica" is one which reacts with F compounds in the acid to give fluorosilicic acid, and may be diatomaceous earth or an activated silica.
