A series of elements having spherical surfaces of different radii may be pressed successively against the surface with progressively increasing force and a curve plotted for each element the maxima of the curves corresponding generally to the elastic limit and the "envelope" of the series giving variations with depth of the characteristic through e.g. a surface layer hardened by treatment. A single e.g. cylindrical element may be engaged with the article in successive orientations differing by 90 degrees in the plane of the surface, Tresca or Von Mises criteria being used to determine residual stresses in the article. Strain gauges attached to the article surface adjacent the test area indicate when the elastic limit of the material is reached.
