1357856 Sighting apparatus RHEINMETALL GmbH 22 Aug 1972 [7 Oct 1971] 39023/72 Heading F3C A sighting apparatus for a firearm comprises a housing consisting of tubes 1, 2, Fig. 1, the tube 1 having a part-reflective mirror 12 therein and the tube 2 containing a light rod 6 which is positioned in a cover 7 and is illuminated by incident ambient light and/or by a light source 9. An image of the luminous rear end of the light rod 6 passes through apertures 5a and 4a respectively of a disc 5 and a screen 4, both of which are supported by a sleeve 3, to a mirror 11 which passes the image to the mirror 12, via aligned apertures 2a, 1b respectively in the tubes 2, 1. This image appears as a light mark to the eye of a marksman who is viewing a target through the tube 1. A mirror coated portion 12a may be provided at the centre of the mirror 12 to provide additional reflection. Adjusting screws 10a, 10b, Fig. 2, are provided to align the sleeve 3, and consequently the light mark, with the firearm (not shown). A dome end 7a, Fig. 1, of the cover 7 has a reflectively coated lining 8 and an opaque line 8a, covers the front end of the light rod 6. In another embodiment the brightness of the light mark is adjusted to the light conditions by a tubular screen 13, Fig. 3, which is movable axially by means of a knob 14 on a lever 14a, the latter passing through a slit 15 formed in the tube 2. In a further embodiment a light source 9b, Fig. 4, comprises tritium-filled glass tubes in an opaque part 9c which is fixed to a disc 5 by a screw 5b. The light rod 6 has a reticule at its end 6b and has a portion 6a of increased size at its other end, the latter facilitating the entry of additional incident light into the light rod 6, especially in view of the end of the cover 7 having a flat portion 7c. A cap (not shown) may be provided for night use in order to prevent the end 6a of the rod 6 being visible, alternatively an iris diaphragm may be fitted into the end of the cover 7. The diaphragm has blades 16 which are displaceable when a ring 18 is rotated by a lever 19A provided with a knob 19, and has a fixed ring 17 secured to the end of the cover 7.
