Poisoned bait for Pharach ants contains a mixt. of eggyolk, water-soluble carbohydrates and decachloro-octahydro-1,3,4-metheno-2-H-cyclobuta (c,d) pentalen-2-one ("Kepone") (RTM). The mixt. must be dried at below the coagulation point of the protein, to have attraction for the ants. The mixt. is then milled to a coarse powder. Pref. carbohydrates are honey or sugar-honey mixts. Drying proceeds at low temp. by freeze-, vacuum- or spray-drying methods. Ratio of protein to carbohydrate is 1:1 to 3:1, other types of ants such as Lasius niger will take the bait which is long-lasting, non-toxic to mammals and is pref. by the ants above all other available foodstuffs. A preserving agent such as phenylemrcuroacetate may be added for stability in damp places.
