Higher hydrocarbons are converted into gaseous mixts. contg. mainly CO, CH4 and/or H2, over a catalyst contg. oxides of La, Co, Ni and U, on an oxide carrier. The catalyst has high activity and long life, does not include expensive precious metals, resists rapid changes in temp., and raises the rate of reaction by about 10x. Specif. the catalyst is used in combustion engines, esp. automobile engines. The mixt. of CO, CH4 and H2, with addn. of air, is fed to the engine; this mixt. burns more rapidly and more completely in the engine than the higher hydrocarbons, thus reducing pollution.
