The sludge from a sewage treatment plant is screened to remove fibres and coarse particles and the underflow is separated into two phases. One is enriched with inorg. solids. The screening operation can be saved if the sludge is separated in one stage into a first fraction with the fine solids. The latter is then subjected to stabilization.
