The reaction is carried out at high temp (pref. 75-100 degrees C) in an aprotic solvent esp. dioxan. The Raney Ni catalyst may have its H partly replaced by D or T, e.g. by contacting the catalyst with D2O or T2O for several hrs. at 80-115 degrees C, to give a prod. with partial replacement of 19-H by D or T. Prod., esp. periplogenin and its glycosides, are useful as cardiotonic and diuretic agents, the labelled cpds. are useful as tracers in investigation of metabolic processes.
