An automobile tyre with anti-skid spikes is constructed as follows: the spikes are U-shaped and mounted in strips, opt. of multi-layer construction, in the manner of bristles in a brush; the spikes penetrate through the strips and project by several times their dia.; =1 pref. 2 such strips are fitted around the tread of a tyre. Pref., the strips are fitted in longitudinal grooves of the tread e.g. two parallel strips on either side of the crown of the tread, with transverse ribs of the tread between them. The contact points of the spikes constitute =0.5% of the tread contact area. Pref., high alloy steel spikes are used, in a composite strip of polyamide fabric with an elastic outer layer of polyethylene.
