Prodn. of optimum estimates of the ease of drilling of the ground, the depth and drilling speed, from measurements of depth, rotational speed of and weight applied to the drill bit, such measurements having a Gaussian error distribution, by the prodn. of (a) the matrices (A) and (B) in the linear system of equations: X = AX + BU where X = position vector, U = input vector of the stochastic error; (A) and (B) are dependent on the nominal values and properties of the stochastic processes which describe the system; (b) the matrices (C) and (D) in the linear measuring equation; Y = CX + DV where Y = measuring vector, V = measuring vector of the stochastic error, and (C) and (D) depend on the nominal values and properties of the stochastic processes describing the measurements of depth, rotational speed and weight; (c) the use of the measurements of depth rotational speed and weight in a Kalman-Bucy (data) processor, specified by the matrices (A,B,C and D) to produce estimates of the ease of drilling, drilling speed and depth.
