Hops residue, albumen clarifier (finings) etc. collects in the centre of the floor of the whirlpool type settling vat and a whirling spray assembly on the floor at the centre i.e. underneath the piled sediment produces a radial outwards flow of water over the floor to drainage holes at the periphery so that the sediment is extracted atumatically; the system may be operated continuously or sporadically. The spray assembly may be driven by an electric motor through a shaft coaxial within the vertical water feed pipe, both passing through the floor plating or from above. Alternatively, the water flow itself may be used to drive an internal turbine with reduction gearing. The water pressure is 4-6 atmos. and the speed so rotation 1-2 rpm. Labour and cost saving compared to entry via manholes and manual cleaning of the settling vats.
