The system for damming a flowing river in order to keep a buidling site dry uses flexible re-routing ducts. The water is dammed upstream of the site and diverted through flexible hoses past the dry site. This system ensures reliable drying without the use of elaborate damming. The ducting (4) is made in oval cross-section from a flexible material and it is held by throttling so that when full it forms a dam for the water upstream of the building site (11). The hose can be made from readily-joined sections which are provided with connectors in the form of clasp link sliding fasteners. The hose can be used in conjunction with a sheet or alternatively in conjuction with an earth, masonry or timber dam.
