Novel 1-aralkyl-3-aryl-3-propyl-pyrrolidine compounds of the formula where R is hydrogen, or a lower alkyl or alkanoyl group containing up to 4 carbon atoms, and Z is hydrogen, amino, or nitro, and the acid-addition and phenolate salts thereof, are prepared by (a) reacting the appropriate pyrrolidine compound with a phenethyl halide, (b) cleaving the ether linkage of a corresponding ether compound to form a hydroxy group, (c) hydrolysis of the appropriate ester compound with aqueous bases or acids to form a hydroxy group, (d) treatment of the appropriate hydroxy compound with a lower alkanoic acid or derivatives thereof to form an ester linkage, (e) reduction of an appropriate nitro compound by catalytic hydrogenation or chemical reducing agents to form an amino compound.
