A composition suitable for coating a sheet form base to provide a chloride ion indicator comprises an aqueous dispersion of an organic binder and a chloride ion indicating compound. Specified indicating compounds are silver chromate, silver dichromate and mercurous chromate; specified binders are polyvinyl alcohol resins, soluble or water-dispersible cellulose materials e.g. carboxymethyl cellulose, casein, gum arabic, sodium alginate and agar; specified base materials are paper and fabric. The composition may be applied by rolling, spraying or printing and one or both surfaces of the base may be coated; where only one side is coated, the other may be coloured to increase contrast or covered with a water-resistant material, e.g. polyethylene, wax or a wax composition to prevent curling when wet. Preferred proportions of reactants required to obtain the desired chloride indicating compounds, are specified, and it is preferred to have an excess of silver ion present, when silver chromate is used. The indicator may alternatively be prepared by applying two separate coatings, one containing the anion e.g. chromate as potassium chromate and the other containing the cation e.g. silver as silver nitrate. The indicators may be used in testing ovulatory function as described in Specification 1,103,403.
