1424376 Stranding elements in S-Z fashion SIEMENS AG 22 June 1973 [22 June 1972] 29887/73 Heading D1T Elements 40 are stranded in S-Z fashion by passing them in a group 51 from a first device 59 to a second device 45, and downstream of the first device 59 and upstream of the second device 45 the elements are twisted by first and second twisting means 60, 64 respectively which rotate always in the same direction, the speed relationship between the twisting means 60, 64 changing back and forth between first and second relationships, the changes occuring at intervals no greater than three times the time taken for a part of the elements to travel the distance L between the devices 59, 45. The speed of the twisting means 60 may be constant whilst the speed of the twisting means 64 changes back and forth between first and second values. The speed of the first and second twisting means 60, 64 may change simultaneously from first and second values, respectively, to third and fourth values respectively, and then back again in the time taken for a part of an element to travel the distance L. The ratio between the third and first values and the ratio between the fourth and second values may be equal. In Fig. 1 59 is a stranding die, 45 a guide wheel, 46 a drawing-off pulley and 48 a winding drum. There may be separate motors 61, 65 for driving the twisting devices 60, 64; or a single motor 61 in which case the shaft 68 replaces the motor 65 and carries two magnetically operated clutches 69 and 70 driving the twisting device 64 alternately via belts 72, 66 of different transmission ratio. The twisting devices 60, 64 comprise rollers (1, 2, 3, 4) Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) that are displaceable normally of the strands 51, each roller being surrounded by a tyre-like member (27).
