[Also in Divisions B2 and B8] Apparatus for sorting shrimps on a conveyer belt 1 comprises a stop with converging walls (7), (8), Fig. 3 (not shown) one of which may be parallel to the direction of conveyance. The downstream end of the stop is open whereby pieces of shrimp and straight shrimps may pass directly through the stop whereas curved shrimp are held by the stop and are released in timed relation upon upward movement of the stop. A plate 11 positioned in the stop ensures that shrimps are released by the stop when it is raised. In a further embodiment, Fig. 4 (not shown) a gripper (20), (22) is positioned upstream of the stop and a rotary brush 27 with a peripheral recess 28 is located downstream of the stop. The recess 28 is synchronised with the gripper such that pieces of shrimp, straight shrimps and incorrectly orientated shrimps, i.e. shrimps travelling head first which advance into the stop beyond the reach of the gripper, are brushed from the conveyer whereas those shrimps which are correctly orientated, i.e. heads trailing, are received in the stop and then gripped by the gripper to be released when the stop is raised and in timed relation with the recess 28 to pass through said recess. In a further embodiment, Fig. 6 (not shown) two stops (44), (45) are mounted on a yoke (43) with their narrow ends adjacent each other and with a gripper (46) therebetween. The arrangement being such that pieces of shrimp and straight shrimps pass through the stops and are subsequently removed from the conveyer, whereas correctly orientated curved shrimps, i.e. head trailing, are stop by the stop 44 and then released as the stop is raised and incorrectly orientated shrimps, i.e. head leading, have their heads gripped by the gripper (46) whereupon the stops and the gripper are raised, turned through 180‹ and then lowered back to the conveyer to release the now correctly orientated shrimp.
