Bearing metals (Pb, Pb-Sn alloys, Ag, and other metals) contng. 50 vol. % of fibres completely embedded therein (pref. carbon fibres or asbestos fibres, various whiskers can also be used) are produced by heating a mixture of fibres and a metal salt(s) of an organic acid thermally decomposable to the metallic state (e.g. lead formate) and compacting the mixture at an elevated temp. The metal salt(s) can be deposited on the fibres from a soln. by cooling or precipitating with an organic acid.
