Continuous casting of metal sections comprises a continuous casting mould, which to start with is closed at the bottom by a retractable closure, and direct application of water cooling to the surface of the casting as it emerges from the mould. Prior to use, the inner wall surfaces of the mould are coated with an adhering layer of a sublimable material, which on casting forms a continuous intermediate layer of products of sublimation from the layer between the layer and the casting: the pressure of this is equal to the metallostatic pressure of the molten metal. The process is employed for the continuous casting of Al and its alloys.
