Borosilicate glass essentially free of alkali and alkaline earth metals is made by a method comprising heating an intimate mixture consisting of from 83 to 99À7% by weight of colloidally subdivided, amorphous silica and from 0-3 to 17% by weight of boric oxide or a source of boric oxide to provide such percentage of boric oxide, e.g. boric acid or ammonium borate, at a temperature of from 500‹ to 900‹ C. The glass contains a maximum of 0-05% by weight of alkali and alkaline earth metals. The ultimate particle diameter of the amorphous silica is less than 0-50 micron. One or more compounds which are thermally decomposable to silica or boric oxide or both and to volatile by-products can be used to form the silica-boric oxide mixtures. The time of thermal treatment can vary from one minute at the upper end of the temperature range to as much as 200 hours at the lower end. Low final temperatures between 500‹ C. and 800‹ C. yield soft to gritty powders whereas final temperatures higher than 800‹ C. produce granules or consolidated glass masses depending on the amount of B 2 O 3 present. The powders are used for forming glass fibres, laboratory apparatus, telescope mirror blanks and for sealing glasses.
