Fluxing agent surrounding the consumable tube which guides the welding wire used in the electroslag welding process, is released when the tube melts, the composition of the flux being such that in the solid state it is electrically insulating and in liquid state electrically conducting. The assembly has a protective casing. A claimed example of the flux compsn. is 1.25-2.25% ferromanganese, 2.75-4.75% of 50:50 ferrosilicon, 5.0-10.0% CaO, 5.0-10.0% SiO2, 47.0-67.0% fluorite, 5.25-7.25% liquid silicate, 2.75-3.25% alginate or CMC, and 13.50-15.50% dolomite.
