Clear gels for pharmaceutical use comprise 43-60% by weight of water, 5-25% of aromatic oils (e.g. menthol, camphor, eucalyptus oil, oil of nutmeg, oil of cedar leaf, thymol and methyl salicylate), 3-10% 'by weight of a polyoxyethylene ether of stearyl, palmityl, myristyl or oleyl alcohol (or a mixture thereof) and 15-26% of a polyoxyethylene ether of cetyl or lauryl alcohol, both ethers comprising 10 to 20 moles of ethylene oxide per mole of fatty alcohol. Alternatively, the two ethers may be replaced by a single mixed ether containing the above components in the same relative amounts. A mineral oil may also be present. The gets may be made by slowly mixing the oils with the molten surfactant and water and cooling.
