A programming device 10 having a plurality of holes which may be selectively closed to set up a program may be fitted into a chain link. A photo-electric device comprising a lamp 42 and an array of photocells 48 produces signals from which a logic circuit Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown) determines whether a bottle, a programming device or an empty link is located at station 34. If an empty link is detected the sprocket 32 steps the conveyer on to the next position. If a programming device is detected, the photo-electric device reads the programme set upon it and writes it into a magnetic core store. If a bottle is detected, it is lowered, and the stored programme is carried out. If the programme specifies that no counts are to be made on the next set of samples, the samples are not lowered to the counting position.
