A mercury derivative of the fluorescein series is prepared by treating with a bivalent mercury compound a compound of the general formula wherein R is a hydrogen atom or a halogen atom R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 are hydrogen, halogen, alkyl residues having one to five carbon atoms or N(R7) 2 residues, where R7 is hydrogen or an alkyl residue having one to five carbon atoms and wherein at least one of the substituents R, R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 is a radioactive iodine atom and wherein at least one of the substituents R1, R2, R3, R4, R5 and R6 is hydrogen. The iodine isotope used may be 131I or 125I. and the mercuric compound may be non-radioactive or contain the radioactive mercury isotopes 203Hg or 197Hg. Specified products of the invention are:-41-hydroxymercury-21,71-diiodofluorescein bis-hydroxymercury - 21,71 - diiodofluorescein dichloro-41- hydroxymercury - 21,71 - diiodofluorescein diiodo - 41 - hydroxymercury - 21,71 - dibromofluorescein 21 - hydroxymercury - 21,51 - diiodofluorescein and bis-(hydroxymercury) - 41,51- diiodofluorescein. Each of these may be labelled with 125I, or 131I, or 125I203Hg, or 125I- 197Hg, or 131I203Hg, or 131I197Hg.
