1345387 Continuously heat treating steel bar BAU-STAHLGEWEBE GmbH 30 April 1971 [30 April 1970 13 March 1971] 12418/71 Headings C7A and C7N Non-alloyed or structural steel bar containing up to 0À26% C and up to 1À8% Mn and in a 10% to 70% cold-worked condition is continuously heat treated by passage through a rapid heating zone e.g. induction or electron beam, wherein the outer zone of the bar is heated to a temperature between 600‹ and 1300‹C so that the central region of the bar is heated at at least 100‹C/sec. to a temperature between 450‹C and Ac 3 , after which the bar is quenched before the central region undergoes any transformation and in the time interval between the temperature of the central region reaching 450‹C and that of the surface region falling to 550‹C. Preferably quenching is effected by water under pressure e.g. 6 to 30 litres per kg. of steel at 3 to 12 atmospheres, to produce an initial cooling rate of 1200‹ to 1500‹C/sec. and an average rate of at least 800‹C/sec. Quenching may be initiated when the outer and core regions are at the same temperature, and may be followed by a further treatment at 100‹ to 340‹C, particularly for 20 to 30 minutes. The process is applied particularly to bar for concrete reinforcement.
